Scratch On: America the fearful
I was having a conversation with a female friend of mine who was complaining about how hard it is to meet people. She has been living in the same area for the past three years and has next to no close friends. I asked her why she doesn't go out more often and she told me that she can't go out alone unlike I can. I thought this seemed odd so I asked her why she thought that I could go out alone and she couldn't. She then told me that she was afraid of being raped. I looked around the bar we were at and thought, "I don't see anyone who looks like they might be a rapest here." So, I asked her what percentage chance, she thought, that she would have of being raped if she ever went out alone. She replied %70. %70!!! I'm sorry, girls. I don't care how attractive you are, there is no where in the world that you would have a %70 of being raped if you went out alone. Just to bust this fictional statistic, for those of you who are skeptical, here's a couple of numbers for you. There are 12,000 students that attend the local university. Out of 11,000 females lets just say that 200 attend night classes (and it's way more than that). And, lets say, for argument's sake, that only 10 of those supposed 200 go to those said night classes alone. According to the %70 chance of rape, one could expect that 7 girls would be raped each and every night. And let's, for arguments sake, say that only 1 in 7 rapes are reported. That would mean that we could expect to see at least one girl a night be raped at the local university. My friends we have an epidemic in our community! Call the police!! The rapists are out!!... No. I'm sorry. Your life is not that of the drama-queen. If you never want anything to happen to you, by all means, stay inside and worry. For the rest of us I say, go out and have a good time. People have become so afraid of everything they end up doing nothing. Let's be America the fearful no longer. As for me, I choose to live my life.
